Information about alpine skiing

Winter is approaching in small steps, that's why I'd like to talk about skiing. This is a purely informational post, you won't find it there: technology, what equipment to use etc. I'm just trying to give you some information about alpine skiing.

 

Some history

  • Skiing came about 4000 lat p.n.e. in Norway and the areas of the White Sea on Lake Baikal.
  • Originally, skis were used to move around without high snow, and not like today for sport and recreation. They were usually made of wood.
  • In Europe, the first exit from 1849 year.
  • Year 1860 is associated with the founding of the first ski manufacturer Sils Maria.

  • In 1893 the first ski club was founded
  • In 1900 the first ski race took place.
  • In the 19th century, skis were transported to America, where they were very useful when prospecting for gold in Alaska.
  • The invention of the cable car really contributed to the development of skiing, because previously you had to go up the hill yourself, which was not an easy task.

Alpine skiing competitions

 

Slalom (SL)

  • Route length: 180-220 meters men, 140-200 meters - women.
  • The gradient of the route: 33-45 percent.
  • We move between gates with a width of approx 5 meters.
  • Placement of poles on the route: 55-75 - men, 45-65 – women.
  • Two runs are played, the time of both runs is taken into account for the classification.

 

Giant slalom (SG)

  • Route length: 250-450 meters men, 250-400 meters - women.
  • The width of the route is not less than 40 meters.
  • The gates consist of 4 poles and two flags, and their width is 4-8 metra.
  • Two runs are played with different positioning of the poles on the same route.

 

Super Giant Slalom (SG)

  • Route length: 500-650 meters men, 400-600 women.
  • Minimum track width 30 meters.
  • Alternating blue and red goals consist of two pairs of poles and sheets.
  • Horizontal gate width – 6-8 meters, vertical - 8-12 meters.
  • The route is marked with blue paint.
  • The competition consists of one run.

 

Exit (DH)

  • It is the fastest of the competition, where you can even get up to speed 150 km/h.
  • The length of the route is: 800-1100 meters men, 450-800 – women.
  • The longest descent is in Wengen 4480 meters, almost 4,5 kilometers.
  • Minimum track width 30 meters.
  • The gate consists of 4 slalom poles and two flags. Its width is 8 meters.
  • There is mandatory training before the competition.
  • One pass, this one wins, which will go the fastest.

 

So much information about this winter sport. In the next posts I will want to focus more on the technique and the necessary equipment.
